Whether you are a mom, know a mom, or have a mom, today is a special day for two reasons:
1) It's Mother's Day. I hope you have a wonderful day! I think I speak for moms everywhere when I say - let us take a nap this afternoon.
2) This is my first product review on the blog! (Disclaimer - I did not receive any money for this review - only a free product to try out.) I'm pretty pumped.
So, shall we dive right in and talk about Life Pearls?
What is Life Pearls?
Life Pearls is a mobile application that helps you spend quality time with your kid(s) and a beautiful memento gift that reminds you to cherish the time that you have together.
From the time your child is born until the time he/she turns 18, there are 936 weeks. That means you have 936 reasons to smile and 936 chances to make memories that last a lifetime.
With a subscription purchase to the app, Life Pearls will send you a weekly activity to do with your child(ren) and a tip of the week to help you effectively engage with your little one(s) in developmentally appropriate ways.
The following subscription options are currently available:
- 52 weeks (1 year)
- 260 weeks (5 years)
- 936 weeks (18 years)
The app is available on both Apple and Android devices.
The memento vase contains 936 pearls, which creates a visual reminder of the preciousness of 18 years. The vase is designed to be gifted along with the 18 year app subscription, but it must be purchased separately.
Each week as you complete the activity with your child(ren), you remove one of the pearls to commemorate the time spent together in the previous week.
The removed pearls can then be passed on as a keepsake for future generations, used to decorate your child's graduation cap or wedding cake when the time comes, or for a DIY project of your choice.
Life Pearls also sells an eco-friendly bamboo box for those looking to create a sleek new family heirloom.
What do I think?
I think the app is pretty genius. The registration/set up process is quick, and the interface is easy to use. You put in a little information about yourself and your child, then select your delivery options. I elected to have my activities delivered on Fridays so I can do them over the weekend and for my advice to be delivered on Mondays to help me start my week off on the right foot. However, you can choose whatever works best for you and your family!
What I love most of all is the simplicity of it. They send you ONE activity a week. To me, that is really beautiful in a "less-is-more" kind of way.
Do you know what happens when I search "activities for toddlers" on Pinterest? My brain explodes. Pages and pages of pins start to stress me out. I just want to shut down and do nothing.
Google? I'm not kidding when I say that my search returned over 40 MILLION results. (Note: Life Pearls has activities for ages 0-18.)
It's like Life Pearls gets me - one activity at a time, just put one foot in front of the other. I'm tired. I'm stressed. I know about doing puzzles, reading books, and playing hide and seek, but sometimes I need a little nudge in a more creative direction. That's where Life Pearls comes in; they've removed all the work from finding those fun activities. Also, the activities don't seem to require many (if any) materials, and most are common household objects. AlI I have to do is carve out 15-20 minutes for an extra special play session each weekend. Easy for me, fun for my daughter. That's what I call a win-win!
While I think the vase is lovely, I haven't decided yet whether or not I am actually going to remove the pearls as my daughter grows. I am super emotional and sentimental, and I kind of think this might lead to a lot of crying on my part. But I do like the idea of passing on the pearls in one of the meaningful ways I've mentioned above. She can use them with her own kids one day or maybe use them to mark the next 18 years of her life in a way that makes sense to her (meeting a weekly goal or doing something fun each week).
Bottom line? Life Pearls is a great gift for new and seasoned moms alike. With three purchase points on the subscription (as well as options for adding the vase and the bamboo box), I think there is a version of this gift that works for every budget and purpose. I would keep it in mind for Mother's Day, baby showers, and children's birthdays.
I also think that a one-year subscription is a small but powerful way to encourage a mom in rough patch. Your best friend's baby hasn't slept in a week? Bring her a frappuccino and the gift of one year of LP ($3.99). Your 5 year old nephew is having trouble adjusting to kindergarten? Take your SIL to lunch and treat her to a year's worth of advice and activities. The neighbor's teen has become especially surly? Remind her that this too shall pass and help her download the app. We can be each other's villages, and Life Pearls is like having an extra villager in your smartphone.
